To be the best partner we can for our horse we must always be learning and refining what we do. Often those lessons come from trusted horse professionals, lessons, workshops and horses themselves, but not exclusively. We must be open to learning lessons in all aspects of life. Often things we learn about horses will impact other areas of our lives, and things that we learn in other fields will teach us something new about horses. This page is a place for me to share with you things that I discover, things to inspire, challenge or just to entertain.
Working with a feral unhandled horse
This is Doc.... named after his original owner who passed away. He was a feral, completely unhandled horse from down the road. This little video is a compilation from his first time leading. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to move him in a hurry, so he had to learn to lead, and then walk all the way home down the road, first time. Thankfully we had already spent a lot of time with him, getting him relaxed and trusting… because when we left the yards he actually got away from me at one point. He thought it was all a bit much, but he knew, and trusted me so I could catch him and make him feel safe again. It actually worked out well because I “rescued” him and he thought I was a bit of a hero. Such a flipping sweetie. We led him down the road with cars and people some distance in front and behind and with his buddy Chester for safety. If you’re interested in the process ask me any questions and I’ll do my best to get back to you.
House Training Your Horse
Some very specialised horse training techniques going on here! Don’t try this at home.... although you can actually ONLY try it at home so maybe just use your own discretion!
Bridleless & Bareback
Bridleless and bareback… just a bit of fun! That’s my daughter Audrey in the background at the start. Don’t worry, she’s always like that!
Horsemanship? Cowmanship!
This is Frostyboy, our most unique “horse”! We got Frostyboy 13 years ago as a calf club pet, but it quickly became apparent that he was no ordinary cow… He was just like any other pet calf at first, cuddly, friendly and quiet to lead. But before he turned 1 year old he disappeared into the neighbouring forestry block, when a herd of feral cattle broke onto our property. We searched and searched but… READ MORE
Practising for Equidays!
Here I just decided to put in a application for the Equidays NZ Toptalent competition (2017). Had to send a little video about the act I might do. Only pulled my bushy ponies out of the back blocks a few days before, so had just started practising... but they are so smart and awesome... and guess what... we got in! I'm really excited and would love to share this with you. Here is a little compilation from the footage we took for the application.
It’s a herd life, moving day!
At the farm I have the luxury of being able to run my horses in herds most of the time. We have 1000 acres but our dairy herd comes first. So, how it works here, is that the horses move around the farm as a herd through the races (farm tracks that connect different paddocks).
Ellen vs Roy!
Annie Roussel here, I have free reign over Ellen's page today. I filmed Ellen working Roy and I guess you will see from the video, but I was quite amused with the whole thing. So I turned it into a little episode called "Ellen vs Roy"!
Bringing horses in from out the back
Just bringing a few horses in from their winter holiday in one of our most remote paddocks. Time to go back to work!
Horsetreks at “The Farm”
I love this video! My awesome horse wwoofer Demi, has been here over one and a half years running our trekking business. We have kilometers & kilometers of tracks in the summer. We always strive to make it an experience to remember.
The way I REALLY do Freework…
Mum you are a real Goofball! I hope you all get a laugh from this like I did.
