Freework is how I start my relationship with a new horse, it is a simple set of exercises, done at liberty, that any person and any horse can do.
What I am looking for is a real connection. I want to give the horse the opportunity to choose to be with me and to listen to me.
Groundwork exercises are great for building relationships and working on specific issues. Freework is really only the first step.
We need to bring the good relationship we have developed on the ground, seamlessly up into the saddle.
Everyday handling is more important than any single exercise we will do, to maintain and build on our relationship with our horse.
Most issues that horses develop are man made or pain issues, they often aren’t behaviour issues but owner issues.
I would like to share with you stories and lessons I have learnt from some of the people and horses that have come into my life. Also follow my journey with the New Zealand wildKaimanawa horses.
